In Module 1, The Right of Writing, we covered a variety of writing forms and styles, terminology and creative actions. The point of the course is to use writing as a visual rather than a communicative methodology to access creativity. To this end we discussed:
: The liminal space (the threshold/the place of all and no intersections
: Palimpsests – in this instance the layering of text and image
: Logograms – visual images/written characters which represent a word or phrase which has a complex meaning – eg truth
: The Medici Effect – innovation comes from the intersection of many disciplines
: The intentions, expression, techniques and formats best suited to visual representation
: Mapping – unpacking in order to uncover layers
: The journey – an inquiry – it is neither about escape or acquiescence, it is about evolving to another place
: Using mythology, 12 glyphs were required. We began with a glyph which you feel represents you
: Post modern cultural theory – all products of a visual nature bring with them associated baggage – including writing and books
Although process is the point of this workshop, it produced some amazing work in the form of paintings and artists books. Only 3 participants per workshop ensure an intimate and result-filled time together.
AnnMarie Nason (Artists’s Book, and Painting)
Jackie Freer (Artists Book and Painting)
Janina Masojada (Painting and Artists’ Book)
Cheryl Penn Painting and Artists’ Book. We all work together which is an interesting approach as I am completely involved in the journey.
And of course, the unexpected surprise – but I’m not spoiling that!
